Palmerston North Aquatic Facilities - Orange Light Operations

Following notice that the Government intends to ease border restrictions between Auckland and other parts of New Zealand on December 15th, Palmerston North City Council reviewed the COVID risk assessment for the three pools. They concluded that as the pools are a visitor attraction when the borders reopen, the probability that out of town visitors will come from an area of the country where COVID is known to be circulating in the community will increase. Council has determined that from the 15th December, entry to Council- owned pools (Lido, Freyberg and Splashhurst) will require a Vaccine Pass for those aged 12 years and over.

Why didn’t Council do this on the first day of the traffic light system coming into effect?

Since COVID-19 started more than 18 months ago, CLM and PNCC been constantly reassessing the risk to our staff and our community, and ensuring we are doing all we can to keep them safe. In the past this has been done against the COVID-19 Alert Level System. Now we are doing that against the new traffic light system. The government guidelines allow Council to determine whether our spaces need vaccine passes. PNCC didn’t want to rush into making a decision, but rather weigh up all the factors, see what mitigation measures they could implement to reduce the chance of covid spreading, and then made the call.
We know some people in our community are nervous about the Auckland borders opening on 15 December, so PNCC wanted to have some decisions made before then.

Please remember, whether it’s a social media post, calling us on the phone, or talking to us at our facilities, be kind. The people you’re talking to aren’t the ones making the decisions. Please be patient and respectful.

If you have feedback about vaccine passes, PNCC have created an online form for you on the council webpage and some FAQ's. Your feedback will be shared with the staff making COVID-19 protection framework decisions.
