Kāhu Kōrako graduate soars high
At CLM’s recent 30th Anniversary Awards Evening, Rain Taylor from the Whangārei Aquatic Centre and Kauri Coast Community Pool was awarded CLM’s Emerging Leader of the Year Award for 2025.
Rain has been working for CLM for approximately 10 years and is a graduate of two Aroora programmes, Tāhuna Tau Atu (now named He Iti Kahikatoa) and Kāhu Kōrako.
Tāhuna Tau Atu, is designed to support rangatahi Māori getting into the Sport and Recreation industry, and Kāhu Kōrako, CLM’s Māori leadership Programme is designed to support Māori leadership aspirations.
Rain, a graduate from the intake then went on to participate and graduate in last year’s National Kāhu Kōrako intake.
Pictured above celebrating with National Alumni graduates of Kāhu Kōrako at the CLM Awards evening, many of whom also featured prominently on the night, Rain’s time in Aroora has spanned a number of years. He first jumped onboard the Tai Tokerau Kāhu Kōrako intake of the programme in 2020, where he completed the programme with his father Mo Taylor (now Assistant Manager at the Whangārei Aquatic Centre) and was working as a Fitness Consultant and Lifeguard at the Whangārei Aquatic Centre.
He then went on to complete the 2021 Tāhuna Tau Atu proramme, and in 2023 was promoted to Duty Manager at the Kauri Coast Community Pool. He finally went on to complete the National iteration of the Kāhu Kōrako programme in 2024 and is the current Aquatics Team Leader at the Whangārei Aquatic Centre and Duty Manager at the Kauri Coast Community Pool.

When asked about Aroora Rain has said:
The Kahu Korako has assisted in giving direction and guidelines to use when dealing with people. The mentoring also teaches you with how to better equip yourself to manage yourself. This enables one to become more proficient in not only life, but also in the workplace. Ultimately, the mentoring results in an overall improved well-being.
I have never heard of any other programme like Aroora that teaches what it does. It is an absolute privilege to be a part of the programme that enables Māori individuals to progress and enhance their lives.
The Aroora team acknowledge Rain’s outstanding success and wish him all the best on his continued leadership journey in the industry and in life for many years to come.
