CLM Community Sport, in collaboration with Scouts Aotearoa and Māngere College, is proud to announce that their initiative, Girl Get Out There, has been awarded Outstanding Event Award at the Recreation Aotearoa Recreation Awards.

Girl Get Out There! was a powerful one-day event designed to break down barriers and spark a love for outdoor recreation among young women particularly those not currently engaged in physical activity. Held on December 3rd 2024 at Māngere College, the event brought together over 180 predominantly Pasifika students for an unforgettable experience exploring the outdoors in a safe, inclusive, and culturally grounded way.

For many, this was their first time participating in any form of outdoor adventure. Activities included fire-building and marshmallow roasting, bivouac building, traditional Māori games (Ngā Taonga Tākaro), rock climbing, flax weaving, and orienteering offering diverse opportunities for connection, challenge, and cultural expression.

The impact was immediate and inspiring: 69% of participants expressed interest in joining a Scout group in the future. And we started a school orienteering group based on insights from the day. This increase in engagement demonstrates the power of providing access to meaningful, hands-on outdoor experiences for underserved communities.

Girl Get Out There! wasn’t just an event. It was a movement, sparking confidence, connection, and curiosity in the next generation of rangatahi explorers.
