Tamariki from Kauri Flats recently embarked on an exciting journey as part of the Inclusive Sailing program, designed to introduce them to the world of sailing.

The first stop was the visit to the National Library where they built a waka and gained an understanding of the sea environment.

Students also made a quick site visit to Akarana Yacht club to familiarise themselves with the environment in preparation for their orientation visit. One of the goals of the course is to build relationships as students are working together in pairs a student with additional needs and their buddy.

The course will culminate in a sailing day out on the water, where students will put their learning into practice — feeling the wind in their sails and experiencing the thrill of steering their own vessel.

Through Inclusive Sailing, our tamariki are developing teamwork, confidence, and a lasting appreciation for the sea.
