State of Play
The purpose of the State of Play is to establish the evidence base for play recommendations for schools through desktop data analysis and site observation – through a ‘snapshot’ opportunity of play across breaktimes.
The profile of play conditions of schools are undertaken in collaboration with the Play Systems Advisor, Healthy Active Learning Advisor & Connector and includes:
- A site visit to observe and understand the school facilities, the built and natural environment and any factors influencing play sufficiency.
- Engagement with tamariki at breaktimes and designated times during classroom sessions.
- Feedback from teachers and principal.
The State of Play covers the entire school grounds and observes play / physical activity, with reccomendations through the lens of:
- Time: time allowed for children to play
- Space: built and natural environment sufficiency for unstructured play
Permission: the exisiting rules and restrictions which play is restricted or now
