Major Facility Upgrade

Over the next 18 months, the Whangārei Aquatic Centre will undergo significant upgrades designed to enhance the overall experience for visitors. The planned improvements will focus on critical areas including water temperature, water quality and air handling, ensuring a safer and more comfortable environment for all users.

The primary focus of this project is on the functionality and performance of the facility’s core systems. We are aware of cosmetic and accessibility issues across the centre and will be addressing these issues where we can, throughout the project.

The first stage of this closure will focus on the leisure side of the facility (Wave Pool, Hydrotherapy Pool, Toddlers Pool and Spa). The work being completed will require a full closure of these spaces, which we expect to take 8-10 weeks. The exact programme of works is being finalised and the timeline will be updated if necessary once this is complete.

Key Areas of Focus:

  • Water Temperature: Improving heating systems to ensure more consistent and comfortable water temperatures across all pools.
  • Water Quality: Upgrading filtration and treatment systems to maintain the highest standards of water cleanliness.
  • Air Handling: Enhancing ventilation systems to provide better air quality for both swimmers and spectators.
  • Pool Tiles: Replacement and regrouting of tiles.
  • Hydroslide Stairs: Full replacement of stairs with a more sustainable long-term alternative.
  • Flooring: All poolside flooring to be upgraded.

The Whangārei Aquatic Centre is committed to keeping the community informed throughout the upgrade process. The start date for this work has been identified as Monday 28th April 2025. Everyone involved in the project is committed to completing the required upgrades with the least amount of disruption, but due to the scale of works, there will be some necessary closures. We are confident that we will be able to achieve the desired outcome by completing work on half the facility at a time, keeping some options available to our customers at all times.

Please note that during the demolition phase of this work (the first two weeks), the facility will be noisy.  The users of the Competition Pool, Learners Pool, and Fitness Centre may be affected during this period. These parts of the facility should be okay to use, albeit with some noise disturbance, which is necessary and unavoidable. The alternative would be to shut the facility completely during the demolition phase.

Free membership suspensions will be available to those who will be unable to use the alternative facilities during this time. Members should contact whangareifitness@clmnz.co.nz to discuss this.

Regular updates, including key milestones and timelines, will be posted on our website and social media channels as they become available.

We thank our customers for their support during this time of improvement, and we look forward to seeing your continued use of the Whangārei Aquatic Centre.

The upgrades to the Whangārei Aquatic Centre are funded by Whangārei District Council.
