Innovative Whangarei Aquatic Centre programme wins award
04 December 2019
Whangarei Aquatic Centre was delighted to receive a merit award at Recreation Aotearoa’s recent awards dinner held in Hamilton to celebrate innovation in the health and leisure industry.
The award was in the 'Outstanding Community Recreation Programme' category, for the groundbreaking Aroora Programme, run over the summer of 2018. Aroora focuses on providing leadership and personal development tools based on matauranga Maori principles.
The pilot programme was delivered to a group of teens, mainly from Kamo High School, and some older participants already in youth leadership roles.
The programme took the 45 participants, over a series of 6 wananga, on to the water (waka ama) and on bush walks to test them physically and open them up to new ways of thinking, and of relating to each other and to Whangarei’s beautiful natural environment.
All those on the course were given free gym memberships for the duration of the programme, were provided with healthy food alternatives on the wananga and were encouraged to embrace healthy lifestyles.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with some stating it was life-changing.
Whangarei Aquatic Centre would like to acknowledge and thank Te Puni Kokiri, whose Matika Fund grant made it possible to provide the programme.
