Our Healthy Active Learning team hosted Harko Brown – a respected expert in traditional Māori games and play – who delivered a workshop designed to inspire and empower kaiako (teachers) with the knowledge on how to incorporate Te Ao Māori in the classroom through play.

The workshop brought together Counties Manukau primary and intermediate school kaiako, and was packed with plenty of hands-on learning, connection and laughter.

Harko shared his deep knowledge of traditional Māori games and use of natural resources, guiding our kaiako through activities that promote physical movement and building resilience in our tamariki. With a focus on inclusivity and whanaungatanga (building relationships), these games provided practical tools for teachers to put in their kete to take back to their classrooms.

Kaiako left feeling inspired, equipped, and excited to share these meaningful games with their tamariki.

This event is part of our ongoing commitment to support schools with resources and professional learning opportunities that celebrate Te Ao Māori, promote wellbeing, and create fun, active spaces for all learners.
