Mahi kaipara

As part of the ‘Tēnei Tōku Whare’ kaupapa, rangatahi have been exploring mahi kaipara, or traditional Māori Athletic activities and games, this year.

Falling within the realm of Rongo, kaipara allow participants to explore innate movement patterns that help sustain health and wellbeing. As well as the physical components of a kaipara, pūrākau relating to each of the activities are shared to further connect and enrich the participants' experience.

For all our rangatahi this was their first exposure to a kaipara and activities included; wrestling (mamau), spear throwing (timata koikoi), stone lifting (toka tū), tug-of-war (hutihuti), team games (poi toa), and strategy games (mu torere).

Mahi kaipara has been such a resounding success this year that the team are looking to develop the kaipara programme in 2023 with more activities and experiences for rangatahi lined up.
