Richmond Swimmer Isaac Armstrong Breaks New Zealand Record
There are some achievements that deserve to be celebrated, and Isaac Armstrong's latest success is certainly one of them.
Long-time Richmond Aquatic Centre swimmer Isaac Armstrong (26) has made history after breaking the New Zealand Men's S18 100m Backstroke Short Course Record at the Swimming Nelson Marlborough Short Course Championships, held in Blenheim from 14–16 August. Isaac stopped the clock in an incredible 1:48.38, setting a new national benchmark in the event.
For Isaac, the record is the reward of years of commitment, determination, and countless hours in the pool. Having been part of the Richmond Aquatic Centre whānau for many years, it's been a privilege to watch him grow as both a swimmer and an athlete.
Isaac is now entering the final three weeks of preparation before heading to the New Zealand Short Course Swimming Championships in Christchurch, taking place from 27 September to 1 October at the new Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre.
Isaac's coach, Shaun Foley, has worked alongside him for the past four years and says watching Isaac's journey has been incredibly rewarding.
"I'm incredibly proud of Isaac and everything he's achieved. Over the past four years, he's made huge improvements through his commitment to training and his willingness to keep learning. He works hard every session, gives everything a go, and always does it with a smile. Seeing that dedication rewarded with a New Zealand record is something really special."
Those final weeks of training are all about fine-tuning his race preparation, building confidence, and arriving ready to perform on the national stage.
